Aim of the course

The objective of the course is to develop professional competences related to family business management in three major areas: knowledge, skills and social competences. The key concepts and theories as well as newest research results from the field will be presented to create the bases for understanding the specific features and challenges of the family business as a special type of organization. Students will be equipped with different methods, tools and techniques, which may be applied in the process of family business management. Special emphasis will be put on developing skills related to identification of opportunities for family business developments and

analyzing and solving the problems specific for this type of organization. On the top of that students will develop critical reflection, team working, multicultural and other transferable skills.

Description of the course

  • Family business: definitions, specific features, benefits and challenges.
  • The interface of business and family: strengths and weaknesses.
  • Potential sources of conflicts in family business and ways of solving.
  • The culture of the family business.
  • Family business development cycle: stages, challenges, internal and external

factors influencing the process.

  • Multigenerational family businesses and the process of the succession: nurturing the successor, stages and sources of potential problems.
  • Process of entrepreneurial socialization: basic stages, methods of acquiring knowledge and skills and shaping attitudes.
  • Family businesses in the international arena.

Methods of teaching

This is the interactive course, which will be based on the case studies of Polish and international family businesses, as well as workshops, debates and discussions. The emphasis will be put on experiential learning through critical reflection.
